Green Hero: April 2013

The Green Hero Award given every month is a program of the Cambridge Green Schools Initiative (CGSI), and the honor is given to individuals or groups who are making a significant contribution or impact towards environmental sustainability in the Cambridge Public School District. The honor is given by the school department’s Office for Sustainability.

The Green Hero for the month of April 2013 goes to Janie Katz-Christy, founder and director of the Green Streets Initiative & “Walk-Ride Days.”

Janie has supported the Cambridge Green Schools Initiative since its inception, and has worked tirelessly to promote Walk-Ride Days in our schools. Janie has expanded the movement of sustainable transportation in both our City and public schools, and has led by example, showing families how it is possible to walk, bike, and use public transportation to get around.

The Green Streets Initiative is a grassroots organization dedicated to celebrating and promoting the use of sustainable, active transportation in the Boston region and beyond. Through its monthly Walk/Ride Days and other community and educational efforts, the organization helps people experience environmentally friendly and healthier modes of transportation, change their daily routines, and enhance their lives.

“Janie is a terrific leader and has energized the movement to travel without cars,” said Kristen von Hoffmann, Sustainability Manager. “We have seen more students and families choosing to get to school by biking or walking thanks to her fantastic efforts and by the creation of Walk Ride Days every Friday in our schools.”

The aim of Green Streets is to create safer, healthier, and quieter streets and more vibrant communities for commuters and citizens of all kinds. Walk/Ride Days, occurs on the last Friday of every month, and encourages and inspires people to go green by walking, bicycling, and using public transit as they travel to and from work, school, or other appointments.

Congratulations, Janie!
