Visit with Author/Illustrator Nidhi Chanani
On Wednesday, October 11, students from Vassal Lane and Rindge Ave trekked on foot to Cambridge Public Library for a visit with author/illustrator Nidhi Chanani. Students heard Nidhi's inspiring story about how she stuck with her passion for writing and drawing, despite family discouragement, and eventually found success with her writing and art. Thanks to the Porter Square Books Foundation, each student in attendance received a signed copy of Nidhi's new graphic novel,
Pashmina. The Porter Square Books Foundation also donated a signed copy of
Pashmina to every CPS elementary and upper school library!

Gaia Cornwall @ Haggerty Library
By: Sarah Novogrodsky
Gaia Cornwall’s first published children’s book,
Jabari Jumps, is a huge success! The Haggerty was lucky enough to have her visit with our kindergarteners before she begins a Fall of presenting at conferences.
Eric Velasquez Visits the Amigos
On Monday, November 13, fourth graders at the Amigos School were treated to a visit with author/illustrator Eric Velasquez! Eric entertained students with stories about his childhood, his family's Puerto Rican heritage, and education/work as an illustrator. A soundtrack of some of his grandmother's favorite music played in the background as he read from his book
Grandma's Records. He even demonstrated some salsa and merengue dance steps his grandmother taught him when he visited her as a young boy. Eric ended his presentation by sketching a portrait of a student. The fourth graders were impressed with how quickly Eric was able to create a beautiful, finished portrait! Many thanks to Wondermore for sponsoring the visit to the Amigos and to the Porter Square Books Foundation for providing a signed copy of
A Sweet Smell of Roses, written by Angela Johnson and illustrated by Eric Velasquez, to each student in attendance and a copy of the new book
Schomburg: The Man Who Built a Library, written by Carole Boston Weatherford and illustrated by Eric Velasquez, to the Amigos Library.
Pajama Storytelling Night @ the Baldwin
From the
Baldwin Broadside:
Thank you to Karin Kugel for an amazing storytelling night! This event has become a beloved Baldwin tradition. Tony Toledo captivated the audience, both students and adults alike. Tony believes that storytelling connects a community. Stories promote laughter, connection, and caring. In the kindergarten and grade 1 classes, storytelling helps students engage in discussion, it helps to improve listening skills, and it helps to develop students' creativity.
