Emily Murphy and Carlos Loredo are the King School ‘s English as a Second Language teaching team.

MurphyEmily Murphy has been at King school for five years. Before coming to the King she was an assistant ESL teacher at the Graham and Parks School. Ms Murphy, who is fluent in Spanish, studied language in college. Once she graduated, she lived and taught English to adults in Chile. When she returned to the states, she continued to teach ESL classes to adults. Finding that she needed additional income, Ms. Murphy began substitute teaching in the public school system. She found that she enjoyed working with children and went back to school at to UMass Boston for a Master’s degree in Applied Linguists.

Ms. Murphy is looking forward to settling into the new building. Her linguistic goal for her students and their families is that they maintain their first language and use their strengths in their first language to strengthen their English.

CarlosThis is Carlos Loredo’s first year at the King. He comes to us from Las Cruces, New Mexico, where he formally taught 4th grade in a Dual Language class. Mr. Loredo is a recent transplant to the Boston area where he came to study law at Suffolk University. He plans to use his law degree to be an advocate and work on policy and legislation that helps students of color in underprivileged communities.

Although Mr. Loredo, who grew up bilingual, speaking both Spanish and English, received many teaching offers, he chose to come to the King to challenge himself with Chinese. A language population he had not worked with before.

As the year goes on Mr. Loredo looks forward learning more about the King School and to continued growth both personally and professionally.
