New Traditions at MLK

May is Asia Heritage month and we are celebrating it with several school-based activities. This year is the first time that we have celebrated both Black History Month and Asian Heritage month and we view these endeavors as pilots. Monthly culturally-focused celebrations are frowned upon in some circles. They are seen as shallow and perhaps old-fashioned but at the King, we are looking at these monthly celebrations as just that and as an opportunity to get parents directly involved in what kids are doing throughout the school day. The planning groups for both Black History Month and Asian Heritage Month are made up of parents with one or two staff members. Our plan is to really celebrate and highlight the cultural aspects that the CPS curriculum would not touch with hands on, engaging, interactive learning experiences.

We are currently looking for volunteers who can demonstrate calligraphy/writing from any Asian country or any other simple craft or activity based in Asian culture. Stations will be set up around the yard and available to students during recess. We are not looking for grand, complicated projects. We are looking for easy hands on activities that students will learn from and enjoy. If you would like to participate please click here and choose a time slot. If you are not able to sign up using the link, send an email to us with the day and time that you would like to come in.
