CitySprouts Update: October 2015
Posted on 10/14/2015
There is a lot to see out in the garden. There are new plants growing as well as some plants with ripening fruit. There have been a lot of seeds planted by different students, and I can’t wait for a fall harvest!

A number of classes have been out to the garden already but I urge you, parents included, on your spare time to come check it out if you haven’t already! There are wide uses for the garden besides growing delicious fruit and vegetables. There can be different lessons or activities planned around scientific sketching, examining different kinds of seeds, and measuring plant growth. In a few of my classes we have started working on an alphabet book based on the different plants that are growing in the garden. As we come into the fall season we will start to transition away from summer plants such as tomatoes to more traditional fall and winter plants. We have some squash and pumpkin plants that will continue to grow until the first frost. Some classes recently planted watermelon radishes, beets, and mustard greens that can endure colder temperatures. We have also already planted winter wheat, which will survive even the coldest winter nights. Everyone should look for winter rye and garlic in the garden in the following weeks, as those will be planted soon.

The biggest event for CitySprouts during the fall is the cider pressing. Cider pressing is open to every class in the school. Interested teachers sign up and bring their students out to the garden, and we learn together how to make apple cider. Best of all, students and teachers get to try a fresh batch of cider made right in front of them. Often, cider pressing is a very exciting time for the students and teachers.

The garden is still very active even in the fall so don't be afraid to come out and say hello and check out what's growing!
