"This was the first fall for the new garden at MLK and the school community was provided with an excellent harvest. Students were able to taste a multitude of different fruits and vegetables. They also made apple cider using a traditional cider press! It has been a great first year for the garden, CitySprouts, and the MLK school community. We are looking forward to an even better spring.

Sweet PotatoesThe garden has officially been put to bed for winter. That means all of the plants have been pulled up except for perennials. A few classes planted winter rye with me. Winter rye is important because it will continue to grow very slowly over winter and will help to prevent erosion of soil from the plant beds which is important in building soil health.

Another very exciting update is that we've built a hoop house over one of the beds in the garden. The first hoop house at MLK! A hoop house acts as a small green house that will continue to keep the plants warm and hydrated over the course of the winter. Erin Glover's and Sarah McEachern's classes with the assistance of Teresa Walker have started a class science project using the hoop house. It is a really exciting project where they will take care of, monitor, and harvest the plants when ready.

Students can look forward to Daikon radishes, watermelon radishes, red Russian kale, purple scallions, arugula, and lettuce greens. This is the first project of its type so we are really excited! CitySprouts will be back in February and ready to start planting in the New Year!"
