Fourth Grade

The Writer's Workshop launched by teaching strategies for coming up with seed ideas for writing personal narratives. To improve their writing even more, students emulated mentor texts and conferred with the teacher and their peers to put to practice the various skills they learned in the writer's workshop. Students demonstrated an understanding of the writing process and the characteristics of quality personal narratives. They are now being introduced to non-narrative (essay) writing with a focus on persuasive essays.

In Grade 4, instructional time should focus on three critical areas:

• developing understanding and fluency with multi-digit multiplication, and developing understanding of dividing to find quotients involving multi-digit dividends;
• developing an understanding of fraction equivalence, addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators, and multiplication of fractions by whole numbers; and
• understanding that geometric figures can be analyzed and classified based on their properties, such as having parallel sides, perpendicular sides, particular angle measures, and symmetry.

The overarching themes for Grade Four Science are patterns and change. Students explore these themes by focusing on changes in Earth’s surface, transfer and transformation of energy (including waves), and animal and plant adaptations. Learn more >>

Students started the year learning about social scientists and what they do, then quickly began exploring the regions of the United States with a focus on geographic features and map reading skills. Students then learned about the diversity of the U.S. and how different groups of people have contributed to our country over time. They're now taking a closer look at the Northeast and learning why we call it the "birthplace of our nation."
