Update on Our School Move

Update on Our School Move
Posted on 12/16/2015
Dear Families and Students,

Our MLK Community is excited and ready to move into the new school building! Students will report to the 102 Putnam Avenue location on Monday, December 21st.

We look forward to welcoming you to the school. From December 21 to December 23, we will have staff available to greet and guide families at morning drop-off. Families who wish to escort children to their new classrooms and get a peek inside will be more than welcome to do so, being mindful to arrive a little early so that class can get started on time. After the winter break, we will be implementing new drop-off and pick-up routines, and families will be asked to escort students as far as the lobby and then allow students to proceed to their classrooms on their own.

Bus Arrival: Morning school buses will drop off students on the corner of Putnam Avenue and Magee Street. As always, I will be there to greet and escort children into the building. The Magee Street entrance is the only morning entrance into the building from 7:30AM-7:55AM.

Arrival: Students who walk or are driven to school should enter through the Magee Street entrance, go down the yellow stairwell, and go to either the cafeteria or gymnasium. The Magee Street doors will open at 7:30AM for children to come to the cafeteria for breakfast. Parents may drop off their child at the gymnasium or cafeteria where they will be supervised by our staff. Teachers will pick up Kindergarten students from the cafeteria at 7:55AM. All students in grades 1-5 will proceed to their classrooms at 7:55AM.

Tardy: Students arriving after 7:55AM should enter through the main entrance on Putnam Avenue. As always, students will get a late pass from the Office and our staff will escort students to their classrooms.

Bus Dismissal: Afternoon school buses will pick up students on Magee Street. Staff will continue to escort students from the building to their buses.

Parent Pick-Up Dismissal: Parents and families who pick up their children at the end of the school day (at 3:55PM Monday-Friday except 1:55PM on Wednesdays) should enter through the school’s main entrance on Putnam Avenue. Adults are asked to wait in the school’s lobby and teachers will escort students to the lobby area at dismissal. If you are picking your child up before the end of the school day, please come to the Office through the Putnam Avenue entrance to sign your child out of the building.

Please note that our new building has a different level of security requiring card passes to access the classroom spaces. Because of these upgraded security measures, students will gather in the cafeteria or gym, as stated above, and then be escorted in groups to their classrooms. Unlike in the past, students and families will not be able to access the classrooms before school begins unless it's been arranged in advance so that a teacher can let you in.

Please note that there is limited drop-off and pick-up parking that can be accessed from Kinniard Street. Additional residential spaces can be found in the neighborhood. Please be respectful of our neighbors in the community when parking.

We look forward to seeing you on December 21st. We are working to make the transition to the new location as smooth as possible. Please contact me with any immediate follow-up questions. Students will visit the new building on a walking field trip this Friday. We will host a short coffee reception for families in our new building outside the main office on Wednesday, December 23rd from 8AM-8:30AM. During this time, parents are welcome to visit their child’s classroom. We hope to see you there!

Sincerely,

Gerald Yung
