Down in the Garden

Down in the Garden
Posted on 05/20/2015

The strawberries are blooming, which means that summer time (and delicious strawberries to snack on) is not far away. The solar season is upon us and the plants are growing splendidly.

  • Radishes and all kinds of greens are ready to be harvested.
  • Sunflowers, squash, beans, and melons are all planted and ready for the summer.
  • We will be receiving new warm weather crops (tomatoes, eggplants, peppers) this week and will need help to get these plants in the ground.
  • The peas are working their way up their trellises and should be growing flowers soon.

Our students and teachers are hard at work in the garden:

  • Students in Ms. Tan's, Ms. Frain's, and Ms. Schineller's classes have helped us clear our herb beds by transplanting extra mint into cups to take home.
  • Ms. Brumbach's class has planted two different kinds of beans to observe different plant needs. They will be using some of these plants to conduct in-class experiments on plant needs.
  • Students have also studied leaves in our garden, sampling them when possible, and identifying tree seedlings based off of the leaves of adult trees.
There is still plenty that needs to be done in the garden, and many ways in which our garden work can be connected to the classroom.

Possible activities include poetry writing, compost sifting, planting, harvesting (in June), math in the garden (measurements, graphing, area/perimeter), observations and sketching, planting a Three Sister Bed (American Indian tradition), watering, non-fiction writing, and more!

I am at MLK on Monday mornings (8 - 11:45AM) and Tuesday afternoons (12:30 - 4:30PM). Please reach out to me if you would like to plan a garden visit. I am available to collaborate on garden-based lessons that align with your curriculum.

Thanks and see you in the garden!
