From the Principal: May 16, 2016

Dear Families,

I hope you are enjoying the warm weather! I hope you have also visited our new playground. Students in our upper grades (3-5) have started the required PARCC and MCAS exams, and have put forth commendable effort! Please encourage students on these exams and make sure that they are getting enough sleep at night.

College Readiness
As we reflect upon the year, I keep thinking about one of the most important purposes of our collaborative work: to prepare students for college. The district has also emphasized the important of parent engagement as it relates to college readiness. We will focus next year on increasing awareness and excitement for college in every child.

Future Events
Download a printable calendar of events. I know that the last two months of school can be very busy. This calendar will hopefully help with your scheduling.

Please save Monday, June 20th on your calendar. This is a special day with the following events scheduled throughout the day: Portfolio Day (all grades), Kindergarten graduation, 5th Grade Moving Up Ceremony, and a Potluck Community Dinner. All families are invited to attend one or more of these events.

Friends of MLK
Thank you to the Friends of MLK for their help throughout the year with a variety of activities and supports. Most recently, Friends purchased breakfast snacks for our PARCC testing and provided dinner for our Literacy Night. Please feel free to contact the group  if you would like to help out.

Literacy Night
Our school’s first Spring Family Literacy Night was on Friday, May 13th . Thank you to ELA Coach Kelly Petitt for organizing this event. The theme was poetry. Thank you also to the 5th grade volunteers for leading a variety of bookmaking crafts. Reading is fun!

Yours truly,

Gerald Yung, Principal
