Our Parent Group is Changing
Posted on 10/14/2015
Exciting changes are underway within the King School Community! Several MLK parent group members are on a Task Force to establish Friends of the M.L. King School (Cambridge), Inc. (“MLK Friends”), which is a nonprofit organization to support the King School. We would like to invite all interested parents and families to consider nominating themselves or someone else in the community for a position as a member of the MLK Friends Board of Directors. We are also asking parents that are interested in volunteering to help with MLK Friends activities and events.
MLK Friends is a new organization that will replace the current MLK Parent and Families Group, but it will still continue the same role of coordinating parent volunteers, organizing community events, and conducting fundraising campaigns. However, the big change of obtaining a nonprofit status will hopefully allow MLK Friends to expand fundraising capabilities and also expand programming support for the MLK community.
Funds raised will be donated to the M.L. King School and its faculty and/or its staff for school activities. Examples of MLK Friends sponsored donations will include student T-shirts, support of school events such as Chinese New Year celebrations, classroom supplies, and field trips. MLK Friends will be organized and operated exclusively for charitable and educational purposes within the meaning of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, as amended. Once MLK Friends receives an IRS determination letter recognizing its tax-exempt status, it will also be eligible to receive deductible charitable contributions. This eligibility to receive deductible charitable contributions will be retroactive to the date of incorporation of MLK Friends.
All King families are invited to come to MLK Friends meetings. Meetings will be held the first Thursday of the month from 8-9AM.
