Superintendent's Letter: CPS District Plan 2017 - 2020

Superintendent's Letter: CPS District Plan 2017 - 2020
Posted on 06/06/2017
Dear Members of the Cambridge Community,

It is with great pride and excitement that I present the Cambridge Public Schools District Plan 2017-2020. As you will see, this plan sets forth an audacious vision for the future for our students, schools, and district—a vision that was created by all of you.

Our planning process was an inclusive one, shared between a team of CPS school and district administrators and a representative Planning Team of 31 individuals who represented our students, alumni, families, teachers, community partners, school leaders, district leaders, and School Committee members. Through extensive outreach by these planning participants, hundreds of people across Cambridge joined us in envisioning the future for our students and district, lending their voices and sharing their diverse experiences and perspectives. We heard, in all you said, the common aspirations we share for our students, and this plan is designed to achieve those aspirations. I offer my gratitude to all who participated over the past year and gave their time in service of Cambridge students. I offer special thanks to all of the members of our inclusive Planning Team.

The CPS district plan will serve as our roadmap over the next three years, and we will align our district systems, including the budget and school improvement plans, with this roadmap. Each year, we will prioritize a number of the plan’s initiatives for implementation and school and district administrators will create an action plan for these initiatives, conducting the more detailed planning that is required for effective implementation and monitoring. These annual action plans will play a critical role in the continuous improvement process we are instituting within CPS as part of the Strategic Objective 5, Improve Implementation and Progress Monitoring. This process will help us treat the district plan as a living document. We will monitor, assess, and adjust the plan as necessary, in response to our progress. We are also working on a glossary of terms for the plan, and will provide this appendix with the plan in the near future.

As you review the CPS district plan, I hope you will see the ways in which it supports improvement for all students, all student groups, and all grade spans, including elementary, upper, and high school. The plan’s transformational changes in teaching and learning, student goal setting and individual supports, and family and community partnerships are designed to benefit all CPS students, and through the plan’s outcomes, we will measure these benefits for each student group. Our focus on effective inclusive practices in all classrooms, student engagement, and systems of support that will strengthen each student’s academic and social-emotional learning as part of Strategic Objective 3, Support the Whole Child as an Individual, will support learners who may be struggling to those who may be advanced. By grade spans, the elementary and upper school programs will be reviewed and strengthened as part of Strategic Objective 5, Improve Implementation and Progress Monitoring, and high school curriculum and technology programs will be strengthened as part of Strategic Objective 1, Provide Equity and Access.

With its focus on providing all students with the rigorous and culturally relevant curriculum, resources, and programs they need for postsecondary success as part of Strategic Objective 1, Provide Equity and Access, this plan will lead us through our most challenging and essential work: closing our persistent opportunity and achievement gaps. We are confident that through this plan, all of our students will rise.

Sincerely,

Kenneth N. Salim, Ed.D.
