Students love for reading showed up across all Cambridge Public Schools on Read Across America Day this year. Schools participated in various ways to honor Dr. Seuss's birthday and celebrate the joy of reading. Here are a few stories from across the district.

Graham and Parks School
Read Across America DayOf course the library is always about great books, but during Read Across America, we really celebrated our love of reading.

It has become a Graham and Parks tradition to celebrate with an all day, school wide pajama party. We bring in quilts and blankets and create cozy nooks all over the library. There is something magical about seeing a roomful of kids snuggle in with favorite books, reading buddies, and possibly a stuffed animal and just getting lost in their reading. Many students and teachers commented that it is one of their favorite days of the year.

On Friday, March 3 the Haggerty School kicked off a month of celebrating reading. At our monthly school assembly kindergarten students shared facts about Dr. Seuss. Fifth graders shared their vacation reading challenge. Everyone joined in the day by dressing as a favorite book character.

Guest readers visited classrooms and reading buddies had special time together. At the end of the month the entire Haggerty School will enjoy a very special visit from Aaron Becker, the creator of the Journey, Quest, Return wordless books.

King Open School
The King Open School celebrated Read Across America Day by hosting local community members to come read to our students. Each classroom had a special guest read aloud to the class for 30 minutes and explained why literacy is important to them. Read on >>

The eleven classrooms that comprise Preschool - 1st grade were invited to a Read Across America Day assembly. At this assembly we celebrated the 20th anniversary of Read Across America Day and Dr. Seuss's birthday with a silly and delightful dramatization of Green Eggs and Ham! All students in attendance were sent home with a letter to families explaining the importance of this day, a Dr. Seuss pencil, and a fun sheet to do at home to continue the celebration. Read more >>
