Enroot

Enroot is a community-based nonprofit with a mission to empower immigrant youth to achieve academic, career, and personal success through inspiring out-of-school experiences. Enroot has been serving Cambridge Rindge and Latin Schools students for more than 25 years.

Enroot’s progressive program model spans two to six years of a student's high school to college trajectory. We recruit students designated as English Language Learners (ELL) or Formerly Limited English Proficient (FLEP) at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School. Our program model is designed to serve students with different levels of English language proficiency: students who arrive in Cambridge and are just beginning to learn English enrol in the Explore program, whereas students who enter high school with a high degree of English proficiency participate in the Emerge program.

The Explore Program is designed to serve students who are newly arrived to Cambridge. Students are matched 1-1 with an adult volunteer mentor, receive individualized case management, and attend weekly workshops where students increase their English language acquisition and develop a multi-cultural identity.

Leadership Program students are provided with holistic, wrap-around programming, spending nearly 15 hours a week engaged in activities designed to increase access to postsecondary and career opportunities. Many students extend their learning day by 50% through after school internships, weekly mentoring and academic tutoring, and leadership development seminars. Throughout the seminar, held at CRLS, students explore post-secondary paths, career interests, gain practical professional skills, and become increasingly connected and engaged in the community. Additionally, students attend field trips to local colleges and universities, visit local workplaces, and hear from immigrant leaders in Cambridge.

Enroot’s Emerge Program is designed for students who were previously in English Language Learner classes, but were ‘mainstreamed’ after successfully passing the English tests and being designated Formerly Limited English Proficient (FLEP). Emerge students meet 1:1 with a mentor every week, participate in a monthly workshop, and are invited to Leadership field trips.

All Enroot programs are run during the academic year.
