Early Literacy Intervention (ELI)

Supplementary support for students K-3 who need additional instruction in literacy.

Most students learn to read and write by participating in the instruction provided within their classrooms. Despite good classroom teaching, some children still find learning to read and write to be difficult. For these children, early literacy intervention is available so that their earliest encounters with print are enjoyable and successful.

Early intervention is important because the gap between the lowest and highest performing children is narrow in lower grades. Without early intervention, these gaps widen later in elementary school.

Each school in Cambridge has an Early Literacy Interventionist who is highly trained in the early detection of reading difficulties and how to help those who are struggling. They provide skillful literacy instruction individually in the form of Reading Recovery, and in small groups that focus on guided reading, guided writing, and word study using the Leveled Literacy Intervention System.
